VIRTUAL CROSS COUNTRY
On Friday the 12th of June, Gladstone High School held a cross country run. 20 students participated ranging from Year 8-12. The distances ran varied depending on age group with the shortest distance being 3kms and the longest being 6kms. The student’s results were then uploaded online to be compared with students from all over the state. There were some impressive times throughout the day with a couple of highlights being Max Crouch running 6kms in 27:32 minutes. Clay Hadley completing 5kms in 22:41 minutes and Madeline Hansen completed the 4km race in 21:03 minutes.
A massive thanks to Alison Johnson, Tyler Norton, Barry Martin and Daniel Seidel for helping out on the day.
Congratulations to all students who participated in the race! Tyler Hogan for completing the race!
ONLINE PROTECTION
On Monday 24th of June, the Year 8 students participated in a police talk presented by Ashlee Bowman, at Gladstone High School, as part of their ‘Drugs and Alcohol’ unit within Health. The presentation discussed the consequences, risks and effects of illegal drugs.
Students were further educated on the risks, laws and consequences of taking illegal drugs, finding many of the facts learnt both interesting and shocking. They particularly learnt that drugs can affect the human brain and the way it develops. Drugs and Alcohol also don’t just affect your physical body and health, they can also affect your mental health, your relationships, your social life and your criminal record. After the presentation, the students were able to ask Ashlee questions to further enhance their knowledge and understanding in this particular area.
Students were given safe online contacts and numbers to phone if in need of any help or if they had any questions. It is never too late to seek support or advice. Your safety should always come first!

BUSHWALKING LEADERSHIP COURSE
On the weekend the 20th-21st of June, Luke Bartlett participated in a bushwalking outdoor leadership course at the Para Wirra Conservation Park. The aim of attending the course was to expand Luke's knowledge of leading outdoor expeditions for the Outdoor Education classes. Over the weekend Luke participated in many challenges which included a 12km orienteering course, solo night navigation and responses to emergency situations. Although it rained for majority of the weekend it provided Luke with a great opportunity to improve his skills and ensure he got his waterproofing right!
Luke Bartlett is looking forward to sharing his knowledge with students and lots of enjoyable outdoor experiences to come!
GOVERNING COUNCIL NEWS
A bit of a different start to the year for Governing Council with our two meetings to date held via Zoom. Whilst this is great for being able to stay in touch, I think we are all looking forward to meeting together in Week 4 of Term 3! New councillors for this year are Nicki Barberien- Canteen Rep, Toni Ashby and Craig Pedler.
We wish them a very warm welcome and hope they enjoy their time on Governing Council. Our returning reps for the final year of their term are Andrew Hughes- Vice Chairperson and Treasurer, Brooke Hansen- Secretary and Jodie Zwar.
We also warmly welcome our three student reps Georgia Wegner, Madeline Hansen and Reuben Hughes. The remainder of Councillors have re-nominated for a 2-year term. Kathryn Hansen- Chairperson, Russell Wilsmore and Judy Crosby.
Bronwyn Mumford is the Community Rep for a 1-year term and Jackie McAllister is representing staff. If you know any of these representatives, please feel free to chat with them about Gladstone High School and how you can be involved. We are on the lookout for one more representative.
If you feel you would like to contribute to the growth of GHS, please contact the school or one of our Representatives and join our team. Meetings are held on Tuesday evenings in Week 4 and Week 8 each term.
Gladstone High is welcoming back volunteers from the end of June and we encourage you to consider volunteering for canteen duty. This is a 3 hour commitment, as many times a term as you would like. This support is welcomed by Governing Council and we encourage everyone to commit to one duty a term. This lightens the load for the Canteen Manager, Angela, and gives you a chance to show support for the school. Please contact the school to select a date!
Governing Council is committed to contributing to the school through fundraising. We have recently moved to purchase a water fountain to be put down at the Ag block. This has been a long term request by students to have drinking water available and Governing Council is very happy to assist!
If you have any queries about Governing council, please feel free to contact any of the above councillors, or the School at any time!
