As the year rapidly comes to a close we are starting to finalise staffing details. We are very pleased to announce that due to an increase in enrolments, particularly at year 10 level we are now able to create two classes for each of the years 7- 10 in 2022. We will now welcome Scott Watson to the staff next year.
Planting of the amphitheatre area will begin next week, which fits in very well with the rainfall this week. Please stay tuned as we may try and fit in a working bee before the end of the year to get it all planted and mulched.
Despite the weather yesterday our year 11 student leaders participated in the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Town Hall. The rest of the school were involved in an assembly organised by staff and students. This was very well received and students certainly walked away with a greater appreciation of the significance of the day.
Year 11’s are heading into their last couple of weeks at school with end of semester exams and tests next week followed by a week of introductory lessons, first aid, white card training and Defensive Driving. Students will also be supported during this week to complete their Research Project so they can start year 12 with this subject completed.
A variety of other events and activities are happening before the end of the year and I do encourage students to make the most of the opportunities made available to them.

At Gladstone High School we commemorated Remembrance Day in a variety of ways. This year we are commemorating the ANZACS who served in Europe during World War 1, in particular South Australians and Victorians who fought in the battles at Dernancourt and Villers-Bretonneux.
Student leaders represented the school, laying a wreath at the Gladstone Remembrance Day Service held at the Town Hall. The remainder of staff and students participated in a service at school, run by the students, with each individual placing a poppy up the front to conclude the service.
Remembrance Day, the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, is the day where we remember not just the soldiers of that Great War but the service of those who fight and keep peace for our country.
We will Remember them.
Congratulations to the following students for their Term 2 awards.

YR. 12 DESIGN & TECH MAJOR PROJECTS
Year 12 Design and Technology students have completed their Major products for 2021 and they are all high-quality pieces which have now been submitted to SACE. All students who have completed their products worked very hard this year and their work is a testament to their design skills and their commitment to creating top quality products. Well done to the class of 21.

In week 4 the year 11 Outdoor Education class travelled to Vertical Reality climbing in Adelaide. Throughout the preparation for the expedition we developed our climbing techniques as well as components of the planning. This included the development of our own risk assessment, travel arrangements and collaborative skills. When we arrived, we received an induction from Simon and were taught the technique of belaying and climbing. The instructors observed the class do our first climb and belay to ensure our safety. Once the instructors felt comfortable with our technique, they allowed us to tackle the first wall on our own.

The Year 9 Science classes have recently concluded the Plate Tectonics unit by completing the Earthquake resistant building project. Students were placed into groups of two or three and set an engineering challenge to produce an earthquake resistant structure. Prior to engaging in the task, students watched an episode of Engineering Connections(S01E02) that centred around a skyscraper in Taiwan – Taipei 101. It discussed fundamental engineering design principles that seek to reduce the effect of seismic activity upon building structure, given Taiwan’s tough location above a tectonic plate boundary known as a seismic fault line and a typhoon hot-spot.
The aim of the task was to incorporate some of these engineering principles within the overall group design. The engineering challenge aspect was introduced by only providing each group with a finite set of resources (30 skewers, 15 pop sticks, 20 rubber bands, 15 paper clips, 4 hot glue sticks, 2m of string etc.) and setting particular requirements such as, overall height, minimum number of storeys, and ability to withstand a set weight on each storey. Throughout construction, groups were encouraged to conduct their own preliminary seismic activity tests with weights to simulate earthquakes and reveal potential weak points within the structures that need reinforcement.
Students worked together to hone their creativity, communication and problem-solving skills. Particularly when desired resources (such as hot glue sticks and skewers) became scarce, groups were able to negotiate and barter if available and agreed upon or relied on their ingenuity to form effective solutions from remaining resources. When put to the test each building was loaded with the weight requirement and had to endure 10 seconds each of a weak to moderate (3.0 – 5.9 magnitude on Richter scale) earthquake followed by a strong to major (6.0 – 7.9) earthquake. Groups were also provided with the opportunity to repair and reinforce the building between these tests. If buildings survived these simulations the weight per storey was increased and then tests repeated.
Students did well to include the engineering principles; particularly the concept of base isolation which was difficult to integrate within designs. Students also reflected on where these buildings are best suited around the world.

On the 28th of October the year eights and nines departed to Jamestown school oval for tag rugby. The day got off to a windy start with our shelter nearly blowing over before we got it up, but we pushed through and continued setting up. It took a while for the umpires to explain the rules but once they did, we were off and playing, with Gladstone 1 playing the first game of the day. Throughout the day we lost a lot of players due to injury, so we ended up combining two of the boys’ teams. There were some great performances with one of the boys’ teams making it all the way through to the grand final. It was a close game, but Gladstone managed to pull through and win the game. Overall, it was a great day! The girls’ teams won a few games throughout the day and demonstrated great sportsmanship throughout all their games.
I’d like to thank all the teachers, bus drivers and helpers that made the day possible and Jamestown Community School for hosting the day.

SCHOOL COVID VACINATION CLINIC
THANK YOU
GHS Governing Council would like to say a big thankyou to the staff and students of GHS who supervised and managed the canteen for 3 days in week 3 whilst the Canteen Manager was unavailable. If not for these wonderful people the canteen would have been closed at that time! If you would like to volunteer to help out in the canteen at all, please contact the school.
Kathryn Hansen - GHS Governing Council Chairperson
The D2C pathways trailer has now been converted and refurbished by our groundsman Barry Martin. The trailer will now be utilised by the school for multiple uses to keep students and staff's personal items and school equipment safe on outings for school camps and excursions.
Thank you Barry, it looks great!
