A very warm welcome to 2021 for all of our families. It has been a wonderful start to the year, especially with so many students excited to be here and very enthusiastic about how their week has gone already.
We are very excited to have some new staff join our team: Kate Seidel – Middle School Coordinator, Toby Cocks – Design and Technology, Ben Hussell – Year 8, Nathan Gillard – Student Support, Ali Gulin – Administration and Susie Higgins – Canteen.
The start of the year has been very busy, as expected and already we have had house meetings to ask for nominations for both junior and senior house captains. It is wonderful to see many students accepting nominations and we look forward to announcing the House Leaders for 2021. Swimming Carnival is Wednesday 10th February starting at 3.30pm. We encourage parents and families to come along and support the students.
Next Friday at 9.50am we will be having our formal Dux and Induction Assembly. Families are invited to attend, however, to ensure we do not breach capacity can you please let the school know if you are planning to attend.
Congratulations to our graduating Year 12 students from 2020. It has been wonderful to see and hear what they are now doing. Many students are already employed in full time work, involved in apprenticeships or undertaking further study. Madeline Hansen was Dux of 2020 with an initial ATAR of 95.6. With bonus points this ATAR then became 99.75, a truly wonderful achievement. The students who applied for University were all accepted into either their 1st or 2nd preference. We wish them all the best.
This week we were very pleased to be able to use the new toilets and change rooms. It feels like it has been a long time planning and building but it was delightful to see the students’ enthusiasm for sinks that were at their level.
We now have a QR code for Gladstone High School and require any adults who come on to the grounds to either check-in with the code or to complete a paper sign in. Students are not required to check in with the code.
Thank you to the parents who indicated in the consent booklets their availability for volunteering in the canteen. If you didn’t fill in any details but would still be willing to do just one day a term please call the school and let Susie know.
Hi All
Welcome back to all the students and parents. We have been getting ready for first week back of students for a while now and we hope they are settling in well. Students should have their timetables and should have met all their teachers by now. We have a bit more time now in morning homegroup/ pastoral care and most classes are concentrating on student’s organisation skills including diary use. Teachers will be sending home subject outlines and that should give you an idea of what they will be studying this term/semester. Please take an interest in what they are doing and sign the outline to indicate that you have seen them.
At this time of the year there is always much administration work and forms to be signed so please help by getting the forms back quickly. There is a consent booklet, and an Aquatics form which is very important as swimming carnival is Wednesday week 3. Reminder that this is a twilight carnival, and it would be very pleasing if many parents attended to cheer the swimmers on. If there are any medical conditions such as bee stings that students will need medication for, a reminder that a medical plan needs to be lodged at the school.
Also coming up are: Elevate Seminars for year 10s and 12s next week on Tuesday (week 2) and school photos on Wednesday week 4. If you look at the Sentral calendar you will see that term 1 has a lot of highlights and is as usual very busy. If you have any questions about these activities or anything to do with school please do not hesitate to contact us.

Hello! I am very excited to be joining the Leadership team at GHS as Middle School Coordinator for 2021. I have spent the past three years in a Wellbeing and Learning Support role at Booleroo Centre DS and teaching from Years 2 to 12. I really enjoyed working in an R-12 school and feel that this has given me a great perspective on transition from Primary to High School – which will be very helpful this year as I work closely with our local primary schools not only for Year 8 transition but also Year 7s into High School.
My background includes some time in Roxby Downs, Whyalla and Port Pirie – teaching Middle School and as a leader in Special/Inclusive Education. I live locally and my four children attend Gladstone Kindergarten, Primary and High School as well as being involved in committees and sporting clubs.
At GHS my role will include overseeing NAPLAN and PAT, Three-way Learning Conferences and supporting Middle School students, families and teachers. I value regular positive communication with families so if you have any questions or concerns please get in touch through the school. I’m looking forward to getting to know your children over the coming weeks – especially the Year 8s in preparation for their Aquatics Camp in Week 5!
Kate Seidel - Middle School Coordinator
Hi my name is Ben Hussell
I am excited to be at Gladstone High School this year. I was teaching Music and HASS at Peterborough High School for the last two years, and before that taught a mix of Music, Art and Photography in Broken Hill for just over two years.
My interests are playing in bands, powerlifting and strength sports, military history and motorcycles; riding and restoring (on my first project bike at the moment!). I grew up on a small hobby farm in NSW where we had Murray greys and crops, and other relatives had a superfine merino stud. I am pursuing a Masters degree outside of work.
Hi, I'm very excited to be working at GHS this year and I look forward to getting to know all of the students and their families while I am here. Working in schools is new for me as I have spent the past 5 years working at HB Rural at Warnertown, my role there was administration and finance, but I am not new to GHS as I was a student here and have many memories.
Crystal Brook is my home town and I have 3 children who are all sports mad. So we spend a lot of our time at Hockey, Footy, Basketball, Tennis or Cricket! I also am a Councillor on the Port Pirie Regional Council, this is my first term so it sure has kept me very busy in my spare time!
I will be at the school Monday's, Wednesday's & Friday's, so please pop your head into the office and introduce yourself to me or just come to say hi.
Ali Gulin - Admin Officer
I live in the small community of Whyte Yarcowie to the East of Jamestown, in the Old School House which my wife and I renovated and converted into a home in 2010. I have three kids, Michael, who lives and works in Adelaide, Georgia who is attending University, and Elsa who is at school in Jamestown. Living in the Flinders Region gives me the opportunity to enjoy riding and working on off road motorcycles, which I do at every opportunity. I have a fleet of KTM bikes and a particular passion for Rally and Adventure riding. If you have a class with me you will be hearing all about it.
Having been a builder for many years I completed my Graduate Diploma in Teaching in 2014 and started working with the School of the Air as an Itinerant teacher, which was an amazing experience, travelling around the state to assist remote families with their home schooling. I then moved on to Booleroo Centre school to teach Design and Technology, and at Peterborough High in Digital Technology, Science and Tech. I have a passion for carpentry and wood working which I inherited from my Grandfather and am incredibly excited to have an opportunity to teach Tech here at GHS.

Hi, my name is Susie. I am so excited about my new job as Canteen Manager at your lovely school.
For the past 8 years my husband and i have run Koffi'n'Kandi Cafe in Laura. We have formed wonderful relationships with people in the Mid North and are looking forward to that continuing with new ones as well.
I am hoping to bring forward some new ideas to the canteen, which i hope will entice you. I also encourage you all to give me feedback and any ideas you may have (I love new recipes!)
I am looking forward to meeting you all.
Cheers Susie
Hi, my name is Nathan Gillard
I am very excited to be working at Gladstone High School for 2021 as an in class SSO. I am currently in my last year of studying my teaching degree, and will be qualified to teach Design and Technology and Art in the future. I am looking forward to working and supporting many students in various classes across different year levels. I have recently moved into my new home just outside of Wirrabara and look forward to becoming a part community and getting to know and work with you all.
Welcome to the 2021 School Year! The focus of our Middle School is to develop skills for learning, wellbeing and the future. Our Year 8s are being supported by Home Group and subject teachers to adjust to their timetables, using their lockers and generally being part of Gladstone High School. As we are still getting to know each other, we encourage parents and carers to keep in touch with the school if there is any extra help we can offer.
Students should have received an introductory letter from their Home Group teachers with some general information about routines and processes. This also includes names and contact emails for all of your child’s teachers. Contact can always be made by phone to the front office.
Information will be going home early next week about the Year 8 Aquatics Camp which will be held in Week 5, Term 1. This is an exciting event which forms part of the transition program and also links with the HPE curriculum.

As the Senior School Coordinator, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the Year 10's to senior school; they will officially commence their SACE studies this year as they undertake PLP, the first of their compulsory SACE subjects. I would also like to bring attention to the changes in the Year 10 Careers Camp for this year. With the exception of last year, this has traditionally been held in Term 3, however, we have decided to bring it forward to Week 2 of Term 2 this year to align with PLP (COVID allowing). The Year 10's will then go on work experience in Week 8 of Term 2 so these arrangements will add to what will already be an extremely busy semester. Parents will receive more information about both of these key events in the near future, however, it is never too soon to start discussing work experience opportunities with your son/daughter to get them thinking about it early.
I look forward to working with your son/daughter in 2021.
