We are very excited to welcome Sarah Treasure, as a Pastoral Care Worker to the school this term. Student Wellbeing continues to be an ever increasing focus for us and having Sarah join the team provides another adult for students to connect with. Sarah has included an introduction in this newsletter for some further information. We look forward to her long term involvement in our school.
On the last day of term we held our annual fun run followed by the colour run. This year we negotiated a different route and went to Bundaleer. Despite the track being quite steep in parts, the chance for the whole school to interact together whilst walking and taking in the scenery was most enjoyable. The BBQ and colour run followed back at school was certainly a great way to finish up a very busy term.
In these next two weeks the year 12 students will be submitting the majority of their work with exams starting on the 1st November. We wish them all the best for the next few weeks and well into the future as their time at Gladstone High School comes to an end.
During the term we will be developing our 2022-2024 Site Improvement Plan. One of the first things to consider is our vision. Three years ago, after much discussion, we decided our vision statement would be “Students will be self-directed learners using high level literacy and numeracy skills to participate successfully in a global context.”
To review this I would like you to consider the following questions:
- What skills and qualities will students need to succeed
- What and how do you want students to learn?
- How can you help your children learn?
If you have any comments to make with regards to these questions please complete the survey with this link https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WHL9P9V by Monday 1st November. Alternatively please speak to a member of the Governing Council and share your thoughts.

My name is Sarah, and I am the new Pastoral Care Worker at Gladstone High School. I’m super excited to step into this role as I am passionate about young people and facilitating growth and development. I have worked with teenagers many times in the past and love to see and appreciate the uniqueness and talents each individual has to offer.
My role at Gladstone High School is to provide compassionate and practical support to staff, students, and the general school community when there are times of need. I work alongside the wellbeing team to provide appropriate care within the school and fill in the gaps where I’m needed. I’m available on a more personal level to help students through difficult times as well as a broader level to help improve school culture through organising and implementing activities and events. I’m in the school to provide support to individuals of diverse backgrounds and beliefs and work to enable an inclusive environment for all individuals.
I am employed by an organisation called Schools Ministry Group (SMG). SMG has partnered with many South Australian Government Schools and provided a PSW to help support the school community. A Pastoral Care Worker is overseen by the Department for Education .
I’m super excited to get to know everyone in the school community so make sure to come say hi when you can! You can find me in the yard or learning hub at recess and lunch. Otherwise, you contact me through my email or leave a message for me in my mailbox that is in the Library!
My working hours:
Monday: 10:30am- 2:00pm
Tuesday: 10:30am- 1:30pm
Thursday: 10:30am- 2:00pm

On Wednesday 13th October, 14 Year 11's made the trip across to Port Pirie with Miss Edge and Mrs Seidel to attend the Port Pirie Careers and Employment Expo. The expo provided students with the opportunity to undertake some further career exploration by speaking to people in industry. They were able to find out what kinds of qualities employers in various fields are looking for in new candidates, what jobs exist within the different organisations and information about current and recurring job vacancies. The expo also provided students with access to employers to build connections which will be useful when the time arises to pursue a career. The students found it to be a very valuable experience and many of them made the most of it. They also enjoyed the freebies and the sausage sizzle that was put on.

On Wednesday of week 9 year 8A students set up a scale model of the Solar System on the schools oval, that they had been working on in some of their Home Group time. Each student created a fact sheet and a model of a planet or moon and the Sun. They had to calculate how much we would have to shrink the scale of the Solar System down to be able to fit it on our oval. The students stood next to their models and all staff and students were invited to take a tour at lunch time, with the offer of a Milky Way or Mars bar their reward if they made the journey all the way to the outer planets.
To fit it in the available space (225 metres) we had to divide both the distances between the planets and the size of each planet by 20,000,000. This chart shows the real size and distances and the scaled size and distances.

This image shows the relative sizes of the planets compared to the Sun, but in our scale the Sun is only 70mm in diameter which made the planet Jupiter, the biggest planet in the Solar System, only 3mm in diameter. Essentially if we place the Solar System out to stretch across the oval, Earth is 0.3 of a millimeter, or about the size of a grain of sand.
SOLAR SYSTEM FUN FACTS
At the scale of our Solar System the next nearest star, Alpha Centuri (which is actually a 3 star system) would still be 3400 km away, that’s the same as the distance from Perth to Melbourne)The largest Black Hole ever discovered is a Super Massive Black Hole called TON 618.
It is 6.5 Billion times the mass of our Sun
It is 55 Million Light Years away
On our scale it’s Event Horizon would be 2 km across, which is 10 times larger than our entire Solar System.
Student comments from Year 8A Solar System Model last term.
David – I could see which planets are closer and which are further away.
Aleesha – I really enjoyed doing it and found out that planets were that small on our scale and in the Solar System.
Isaac – It was really fun and exciting to learn all about different planets, it helps me understand a lot about our Solar System.
Lauren – I learned that Mars has the largest volcano in the Solar System (Olympus Mons).
Hanna – I got a better understanding of how far the planets are from each other.
Bella – It was very fascinating.
Cooper – There was lots of interesting things and the chocolates were nice.
Chloe – Was an amazing experience, learned a lot, and lovely chocolate.
Austin – It was amazing to learn just how spectacularly huge the Solar System is.

The Sheep Team have spent alot of time preparing for the Schools Merino Wether Competition. This competition was held on the 8th of September at the Wayville Showgrounds in Adelaide. Here students had to prepare and present their sheep for showing and present themselves in regards to appearance and knowledge on the sheep. Students had to compete in multiple competitions throughout the day.
Team 1 made it to the top 15 for the best presented sheep, however they did not place in the final 8. Students Chad Flavel and Connor Hoskin were selected for the handler’s competition, being selected out of 300 students as being one of the top 18 handlers for the day, unfortunately they did not place in the top 5. At the conclusion of the day, prizes were given out for competitions that had been run throughout the day. Here students placed 2nd in the Best Presented School Competition, this was judged on the students’ knowledge on their sheep, teamwork in looking after the animals throughout the day and how they presented themselves in terms of clothing and attitude. They also placed 4th in the Most Valuable Fleece with Team 2.
In addition to the showing of the wethers, students also had to submit a fleece from last year’s leftover sheep that didn’t attend the show into a School Wool Competition. Here students had to analyse and then calculate the most valuable fleece to send in. In this competition we placed 1st in our Zone 2a (Mid North and Northern Yorkes), however we did not win the overall Zone 2 (Northern and Yorke Peninsula), placing behind Clare who won the overall competition.

On the 16th of September the Year 10 Physical Education class hosted and participated in the MNSEC Fast 5 Netball competition. Fast 5 netball is a modified version of netball that has 5 players in total including two attacking players, two defending players and one Center position. The game has also been modified so that there is a 1-point, 2-point and 3-point scoring zones, as well as teams having the ability to select a power play that doubles their score for that selected half.
Participating in this event allowed the students to test their netball skills against other schools within MNSEC. Gladstone High School entered 3 teams into the competition and were successful with all teams finishing in the top 3 of their divisions. In division 2 Gladstone High School secured 2nd and 3rd, and in division 1, Gladstone came 2nd by a narrow margin of one win.
All students showed a balanced level of sportsmanship and competitiveness. Fortunately do to lack of female Year 10 students, we were able to provide some of the Year 8 and 9 girls with an opportunity to participate in the event. These students held their own while participating at this level and show promise for future competitions. Overall, all students enjoyed the day and were given the opportunity to further develop their skills in a competitive game environment.
A special thank you to Ms Davis, Ms Foulis, Mr Bartlett and Mr Martin for organising the meat, bread and finance required to implement the BBQ on the day. We also acknowledge and thank all teachers and Year 11 and 12 students who volunteered their time to assist with umpiring. Finally, thank you to Amanda Bowman for planning and implementing this successful MNSEC sporting event.

Ashley Hodgson recently hosted a very successful SALA art exhibition in the beautiful gallery at Say.Kitchen, with the support of St Johns Youth, Currie Street Adelaide. Ash showcased over 30 artworks, with more than 50 people attended her opening night. Ashley sold a range of works and is a young artist to keep your eye on as she takes steps forward in her art ambitions.
From here Ash was offered the amazing opportunity to supply 6 artworks for DeafCan:Do’s annual fundraiser; Silent Lunch. Ash has carefully created and curated 6 works for the event which was displayed and on sale alongside another South Australian Deaf artist’s works, William Maggs. We have included the artworks for you to enjoy at home. The event was a huge success and Ash sold 9 artworks on the day.
