To host the Athletics day last week in such fantastic weather, with so many students, families and staff, was terrific. The sportsmanship displayed by the students was exemplary, with several students participating in numerous events to ensure someone represented their team. In the end, the scores were closer than expected after such a brilliant start by Sullivan in the 1500m. Congratulations to all competitors, and thank you to the Sports Committee for ensuring the day went so smoothly.
Tuesday the 29th March is the Governing Council Annual General Meeting. All parents are invited to the meeting or, if you are unable to make it but would like to be involved, nominate for a Governing Council position. The commitment is two meetings per term that are not usually very late and you have an opportunity to contribute to the school and decisions being made. There are committees that invite community members to be involved without requiring your involvement in Governing Council.
There are a range of camps and excursions scheduled during the remainder of the term, including MNSEC Athletics next Tuesday. Traditionally we have taken all of our students to Jamestown for this event. Given the current restrictions and guidelines, we plan to take only the selected athletes and provide lessons back at school. Please note spectators are not permitted at this event. These may be modified in some cases, dependent on the number of students remaining at school. More details about the students selected will be available very soon.

The sun shone brightly in the clear morning sky. Its warmth was overshadowed by the cutting breeze, chilling the spectators. The contestants stood ready, the cold wind echoing the cold feeling that ran down their spines in anticipation of the coming contest.
The freshly cut grass was crisp under their feet, the smell of excitement, trepidation and morning dew created a heady mix as the Under 13 boys took to the field to begin the first race of the day.
The boys did went hard out from the gates, with some strong performances as they broke in the running track. Jobe Stevens set the tone for the day with a fast 06:57:06, with a photo finish for second and third between Logan Wurst and George Rackham, who finished with times of 07:33:35 and 07:33:37 respectively.
The Under 13 Girls next up kept up a strong pace, with Iysha Cunningham setting a swift pace, eventually taking out the race with a time of 07:26:84. Chloe Nettle and Keira Willsmore had a good fight for second and third place, with 08:00:35 and 08:10:00 respectively.
Under 14 Boys saw a mix of ages including some of the brave souls from under 13 who elected to race again for house points and glory. Several of these gentlemen ran a better race than their first one now they were warmed up! Aaron Hombsch with a cracking 06:09:25 took out the race, while Riley Hoskin came in second with 06:37:00, and Huddy Soergel came in third with 07:12:57.
The Under 14 Girls did not disappoint either, with the winner Imogen Cunningham putting on a great display of athletic prowess, finishing the race a very comfortable first with a time of 07:20:50. Tess Cleggett and Nicki Zanker had a good fight for second and third, with times of 09:47:26 and 09:53:09 respectively.
Under 16 Boys saw Hugh Marshall put in a comfortably dominant performance, with a fast time of 05:52:81. Liam Coe and Cooper Seidel had a close finish for second and third, with times of 06:01:60 and 06:07:59.
Under 16 Girls saw more fast times, with Asia Brand putting up a sizzling time of 08:11:47 to take first comfortably. Haylee Magnay came in second with a time of 09:16:45, and Layla Willsmore took third with 09:41:16.
Mr Bartlett joined the Open Boys race, showing a good pace. However, Samuel Shepherdson put on a performance whose dominance was only matched by its apparent ease. Never appearing to even break a sweat, Samuel powered effortlessly around the track, a relaxed smile on his face for the spectators as he passed by. Samuel finished with a time of 05:08:00 just outside the school record. Oscar Pedler, Ronald Nash and Max Hollitt finished strongly as a group, with only hundredths of a second separating them. Oscar came second with 05:30:31, Ronald third with 05:30:91 and Max fourth with 05:30:93, narrowly missing out on third.
The Open Girls displayed a great sense of communal spirit, with Miss Edge, Mrs Hogan and over 20 contestants taking to the track. Lillie Shepherdson ran a fast pace, lapping her opposition with the super-fast time of 07:50:44. Mahli Evans came in second with 12:55:00 and Lara Zanker third with 13:00:00.
A great day was had by all, and these performances set the tone for sports day with Sullivan leading, Oswald in second and Richards Gale in third.
Sports day occurred on Friday the 11th of March at the end of week 6. The weather was nice and warm throughout the day, so applying sunscreen and wearing a hat was important. Thank you to all the teachers/staff who helped to set up, do the timing and some that even competed in tunnel ball, they helped the day to run smoothly and provided a bit of entertainment. We would also like to thank the primary schools for coming out and participating for the teams. Thank you to the teachers that helped with the barbecue.
Will Griffin - Year 10
FINAL LEADER BOARD
Throughout the day, each team engaged with a positive attitude, making the most of this year's event process's abrupt change. This year, students were granted the chance to attend each field event (except high jump) with no restrictions, allowing them to enjoy more events and gain more participation points, giving their team a greater score than prior years.
For the duration of the day, the positioning of the teams did not change, with Sullivan coming on top with 150 points to spare.

The 2022 test window for NAPLAN Online is early in Term 2, running from the 10th-20th of May. A timetable and some information about the testing period will be sent home to Year 7 and Year 9 students at the beginning of next term.
On Monday 28th March at 11am all Year 7 and Year 9 students will participate in a Practice Test Session. The purpose of this is simply to ensure that students are familiar with the online test platform and have a chance to ask any questions. The results of this are not assessed either by the school or the NAPLAN Team.
We realise that some students may not have completed NAPLAN for several years due to the COVID disruptions in 2020. This chance to practice will hopefully help alleviate any concerns they have.
NAPLAN Online is conducted on school devices but students are able to have instructions read to them. This happens within the online program so students will need their own set of ear/headphones with a cord that can be plugged directly into the computer. Bluetooth headphones can’t be used within NAPLAN. The school has some headphones but it is preferable for students to bring their own set.
At home, families can also access the public practice test which has examples of how questions from the four different tests will look. This can be very helpful start a conversation with your child about what to expect. Using the online protractors etc is actually quite fun!
Visit https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site and choose your child’s year level.

Week 6 saw us kick off the Australian Schools Plus funded Growing With Gratitude project in the Upper Mid North schools partnership in regional South Australia.
During the 2 days, Ash, from Growing with Gratitude, was able to visit all of our feeder schools as well as GHS to run fun and insightful sessions with students and staff. The project also involves online programs as well as well-being support for the well-being leaders at the school. The next stages include a wider community approach involving sports clubs and young people led community initiatives.
The purpose of the project is to improve student well-being across transition sites by creating a consistent whole school teaching and well-being framework for students, staff and the broader community.
We are looking forward to more learning about resilience and gratitude through this program. Stay tuned!

Wellbeing and Engagement Collection survey
Our students have been invited to take part in the Wellbeing and Engagement Collection survey. The survey will be open in Weeks 8 to 10 of Term 1 (Monday 21 March to Friday 8 April 2022).
Purpose of the survey
Young people’s wellbeing is an important part of how they learn at school. The survey seeks students’ views about their wellbeing and their engagement with school. Students in years 4 to 12 across the state will be invited to participate and the information collected will help the education system and broader community to support young people’s health and wellbeing.
What is the survey about?
The survey asks students about their social and emotional wellbeing, school relationships and engagement and learning in school, physical health and wellbeing, and after school activities.
How will students complete the survey?
Teachers will arrange for students to do the survey during class time. They will be asked if they would like to participate and are free to withdraw at any time.
Will students’ information be kept confidential?
Students’ personal information and identity will remain anonymous. Survey responses are confidential and no one (including school staff) can use the results to identify individual students. Participating schools with fewer than 5 students undertaking the survey will not receive a report of results, to protect the confidentiality of students.
What will happen if a student is distressed during or after the survey?
The survey includes some questions on topics such as student happiness and bullying.
Teachers will inform students that:
- if they find the survey uncomfortable or distressing, they should leave the survey immediately
- it is not compulsory to take part in the survey as a whole, and
- students can skip individual survey questions if they wish.
Students who would like to speak to an adult about any concerns they may have will be supported to do so.
